The announcement by the junta also came in light of the alleged attack on a Chinese Red Cross aid convoy on Tuesday night during an air raid campaign against rebel groups.

Following the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck central Myanmar on Friday, March 28, 2025, the Myanmar junta has declared a temporary ceasefire.

Here’s a summary of the situation:

    • Ceasefire Announcement: The military junta announced the ceasefire on Wednesday, April 2, 2025. The truce is set to last until April 22.
    • Purpose: The junta stated that the ceasefire is intended to facilitate relief efforts and show compassion for those affected by the earthquake.
    • Preceding Ceasefires: Several armed resistance groups opposed to the military rule had already announced unilateral temporary ceasefires to aid the humanitarian response.
    • Conditions: The junta warned that if resistance groups attack the state, regroup, or expand their territory in a way that undermines peace, the military will take “necessary” measures.
    • International Pressure: The junta’s announcement came amid mounting international pressure for all sides in Myanmar’s civil conflict to halt fighting and focus on assisting earthquake victims.
    • Humanitarian Crisis: The earthquake has caused widespread destruction and a significant humanitarian crisis, with the death toll now exceeding 3,000 and thousands more injured or missing. Aid groups are rushing to deliver much-needed relief.
    • Hindrances to Aid: Prior to the junta’s ceasefire, there were reports that continued fighting and restrictions imposed by the military were hindering the delivery of aid to affected areas. There were even allegations of junta forces firing “warning shots” at a Chinese Red Cross convoy.
While the junta’s declaration of a ceasefire is a welcome step towards facilitating humanitarian aid, it remains to be seen how effectively it will be implemented and whether it will genuinely allow for unhindered access to all those in need
