At least 20 children feared buried after landslide hits their orphanage south of the capital, Kuala Lumpur.

At least three children were feared dead and 24 others buried in Malaysia after a landslide hit their orphanage, Malaysian police said.

The incident took place on Saturday at about 2:30pm (0630 GMT) in the village of Hulu Langat in central Selangor state, just south of the capital Kuala Lumpur.

Al Jazeera’s Divya Gopalan, reporting from Kuala Lumpur, said there were dozens of children present in the orphanage when the landslide hit, all younger than 18 years old.

“The latest number we were given by police says that 24 children are trapped, three are dead and six rescued,” our correspondent said.

Firefighters and villagers pulled out six survivors who were critically injured and they were rushed to a hospital.

A police officer said heavy rainfall had likely caused the landslide. He said rain was still falling and hampering rescue work, which would last until nightfall.
