Construction worker killed in fall

SUDDEN DEATH: Onlookers watch as an SGH medical staff member arrives to check on the victim.

KUCHING: A construction worker fell to his death at a site in the city on Friday night after failing to see where he was walking while talking on his mobile phone.

The deceased, identified as 24-year-old Fabian Linggong of Kampung Ruan Lama in Simunjan, was taking a break of the first storey of a building at the site when the incident happened around 7.30pm.

According to several co-workers, the deceased was walking about the edge of the first floor while talking on his mobile phone when an apparent misstep sent him plunging to the ground.

A medical team from a private hospital was called to check on the victim and pronounced him dead at the scene.

His body was sent later the same night to the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) mortuary.

The deceased, the eldest of five children, had only started working at the site about a month-and-a-half ago.

Separately, an unidentified man collapsed and died while waiting to board a bus along Jalan Simpang Tiga yesterday afternoon.

The deceased, who did not have any identification on him but looked to be in his 50s or early 60s, was queueing up with several others to board a bus when he collapsed on the ground around 2.45pm.

A college student, 20-year-old Belinda Chai, said she was standing in line behind the man at the bus stop when he collapsed, prompting her to quickly notify the bus driver to call for help when she noticed the victim was not breathing.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel from SGH, while a subsequent check by police found no form of identification on the body except for an RM10 note in the deceased’s hand.

The body was later sent to the mortuary, and the incident has been classified as sudden death.
