Canon Unveils The EOS M Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Camera

As expected from all the leaked images on the net, Canon is the last major player to enter the mirrorless interchangeable lens camera game. Considered a new member of the EOS family, the EOS M is also the smallest mirrorless interchangeable lens camera on the market and certainly does looks impressive. Coming in at 18.1MP, the EOS M supports all existing EF Lenses with full TTL and Autofocus by the use of an adapter. With the introduction of the EOS M, there will also be 2 new EF-M lenses specially for the camera, an 18-55mm STM kit lens as well as a 22mm f/2.0 STM.

As expected the EOS M will feature a sensor similar to that in the 650D. One of the coolest features is that the EOS M features the DIGIC V processor that is found in most of the higher end DSLRs! Also, the EOS M will have a full touch rear LCD, first seen on the 650D a month or so ago. The EOS M is a good first step for Canon in the Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens market. It shows that you don’t always need to be the first to come out with a good product.

The EOS M will be available in October in 4 colors as well as a series of different configurations with the 2 lenses and Speedlite 90EX. As it is, the EOS M’s achilles heel would be the speculated price. At US$1,000 for the kit with the 22mm lens, it certainly isn’t a budget option but for everything that you ARE getting, It may just be worth it. We couldn’t get sample images from the camera at the launch as it was still using pre-production software, but we will just have to see come October how it stacks up against the rest.
